With the help of satellite images, the Iraqi court was able to convict 24 ISIS militants for the mass murder that occurred last June.
The images disproved the original death toll of 190, as approximately 770 Iraqi soldiers are seen in ISIS’ propaganda videos and satellite footage. Although 604 other ISIS members are accused of taking part in the massacre, they are not yet convicted of any crime as there is not enough evidence to prove that they actually killed the Shi’ite soldiers.
The massacre was so extensive that blood stains and “areas of raised earth” thought to be mass graves could be seen from space.
Last June, ISIS claimed that they murdered over 1700 Shi’ite soldiers after conquering Tikrit in central Iraq. They have been continuously releasing videos of the brutal massacre as they publish graphic videos of hundreds and hundreds of men chained together to be shot in the head.
A single twenty-three year old man made it out alive by purposefully falling into the mass grave as the ISIS militants started shooting. The bullet missed Ali Khadim by millimeters, a Shi’ite soldier who was instantly sentenced to death unlike his Sunni counterparts. Before facing the death pit, Khadim was forced into a blazing hot shipping container with 100 other Iraqi soldiers for over six hours. By the end of the six hours, two men had died due to the heat and cramped conditions of the box.
Those who are briefly seen in the video claim that they are not guilty as they apparently did not “take part in the massacre.”
Friends and family of the deceased soldiers attended the criminal hearing, throwing water bottles and shoes at the ISIS militants. While weeping and mourning the deaths of their loved ones, many displayed pictures of the deceased chanting “Allahu Akbar.”
