Cats have been a major fixture of the internet since the internet was a thing. Now, your cat pictures may be helping catch terrorists, or at least the cat pictures of #brusselslockdown are.
Brussels went on lockdown this week, because authorities were sweeping the city looking for suspected terrorists, including one high profile fugitive that might be connected with the Paris attacks. Authorities posted on Twitter about not posting pictures or information about ongoing police movements, and the residents of Brussels obeyed, but with a remarkable twist.
This, dear outsiders, is how we fight terrorism here. They haven't got a chance! We haz kittens! #BrusselsLockdown pic.twitter.com/sdq1MbrKsz

The hashtag #BrusselsLockdown was flooded with pictures of cats, which made information about the raids that much harder to find. It also showed the country’s solidarity and willingness to fight against terrorism. The city was still under its highest level terror alery on Monday, and the Belgian federal police thanked residents with a picture of cat food and the message, “For the cats who helped us last night… Help yourself!”
Cats win the internet again.
